Thanks to member Wolfiesden for this great FAQ for new members.
Q. How do I join Project 52?
A: You don’t! Just show up and do the assignments! There is no sign up page. There is no fee/payment for participating in Project 52. Just come have fun with us! You will need at least a free flickr account. Pro (paid) is not needed. Its also recommended you sign up for a Vokle account (covered later in this FAQ) to participate in the video critiques.
The full details about Project 52 are on this page:
Q: Is this a competition or contest?
A: Absolutely not! There is no first/second/third. Simply participate. Have fun! Learn! But most of all, learn from each other. The folks here are very helpful with each other. We are not in competition with each other and there is a spirit of all working together to improve and expand our abilities. Many here share setups, lighting diagrams and other information as to how images were done. This is a learning experience for everyone, not just you!
Q. Where do I get the assignments?
A: Here is the link to the assignments page on project52.org.
Also look for posts here in this flickr group! Keep an eye out for posts that start with "Project 52 | 2012: Assignment"
There is usually a schedule thread sticky here that lists the dates that the various assignments are due. Be sure to check it often as it may change!
Q: I am late starting, you are on Assignment XX, should I start at the beginning?
A: Welcome aboard! No, start at the current assignment! Don doesn’t go back to prior assignments to look for new entries. Its ok that you missed some! Its just fine if you would like to go back and do the ones you missed as a self exercise and it would be good practice, just know that it probably will not be critiqued.
Q. How do I post my entry?
A: You will need a free flickr account or some other image host though the flickr account is the generally accepted method. Then you reply to the assignment thread and link your image in it. For information on how to post an image from your flickr account, see the excellent post by Nickphoto (sticky here) on Posting your P52 assignments
Q: My images are not very good. I would like to keep them private, how do I submit my entry and keep it private?
A: Easy! Post it to your flickr account. Mark it as private. At this point only you can see it. If you post it as per the instructions above, only you will see it. What you need to do is submit it to this group’s image pool. By doing that, you are giving permission to anyone who is a member of this group to see your image. See the question later about removing images!
I have posted a thread with step by step instructions on sharing a private image:
Q. When is my entry due?
A: Check the schedule! But, generally they are due on each Wednesday morning. Don will usually critique it that evening.
Q: Oh boy! Something happened and I will not be able to do an assignment or be able to turn it in on time. What do I do?
A: Relax! Take care of things. Nobody is required to do the assignments. If you miss one, you miss one. Whoopee. Try to do the ones you can. Nobody is taking attendance, you won’t be scorned or adjudicated for missing an assignment. Simply do what you can within your life/time/social commitment schedule.
Q. When and where are they critiqued?
A: Check the schedule! But, generally they are critiqued by Don on Wednesday evenings 6:30pm PST, 9:30pm EST. Currently Don is using Vokle to broadcast the video critique. Its highly recommended you do the free signup there at Vokle so you can participate in the discussion chat during the broadcast.
A good entry place is here:
Q. Do I have to be there for the critique? I usually have xyz thing going on at that time.
A: NO! You are just like the rest of us. We have family and other life commitments! Not everyone is present for the critique. Its not a requirement to be there. But, it is highly recommended! Being there gives you the chance to ask questions and respond to Don’s questions and feedback. If things are such that you can’t be there, don’t worry, nobody takes attendance! Come if you can. Missing it is ok.
Q. So I missed the last video critique. Is there a replay I can watch?
A: There sure is!
The replay of the prior (and many other videos from Don) are listed there.
Q. Don gave me some awesome tips on my photo and I made it better! Should I update my post or post a new one to the assignment thread?
A: You don’t have to do that, many do. Usually people will post new replies to the thread so others can see the original and how you changed it. Don doesn’t re–critique any of the new entries but may respond to them though that is not guaranteed.
Q: Should I remove my image after the critique?
A: That is entirely up to you. Some do. Some don’t. You are free to do what you wish with your own images. They are yours! If you posted your image privately to your account and added it to the group pool to make it visible here, all you need to do is remove it from the group pool and its back totally private again. If you don’t know how to remove it from the group pool, the instructions at the bottom in this thread will explain how.
Thanks, Wolfiesden, for this great FAQ.
